The Nigerian sports community is mourning the sudden passing of Anthony Asuquo, founder of Tony International Gymnastics (TIG) Club, amid growing calls for a formal investigation.
Despite being described as “hale and hearty” shortly before his death, the celebrated coach’s passing has sparked allegations of foul play and financial irregularity.
Olawale Samuel Akindairo, a close childhood friend, has publicly challenged the circumstances of Asuquo’s death.
In a social media appeal directed at the Nigerian Senate and former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Akindairo alleged that Asuquo died just hours after discovering ₦11 million had been withdrawn from his account by his wife.
Asuquo was a pillar of Nigerian gymnastics, most recently leading his club to a multi-medal victory in Portugal in 2024.
While the public outcry for transparency grows, both the Nigeria Sports Commission (NSC) and the Nigerian Gymnastics Federation (NGF) have yet to issue an official statement.
