Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has issued a reminder to Arsenal that they are not yet the Premier League champions, reserving that status solely for Liverpool, whom City faces this Super Sunday at the Etihad.
Despite Arsenal’s seemingly comfortable position they lead City by seven points and Liverpool by eight Guardiola insists the title race is far from over. The Gunners’ recent 2-2 draw with Sunderland means their lead over second-placed Chelsea has narrowed to six points.Acknowledging that Arsenal looks “unbelievable,” Guardiola stressed that this weekend’s match is against the actual reigning title holders.”
On Sunday we play against, right now, the champions,” Guardiola stated. “Arsenal is not the champion, the champion is Liverpool. They come here to defend the title. We experienced that.”
He views the fixture as a critical test for his own side: “It’s a chance to prove ourselves against the last champions of the Premier League, what is our level, and I’m so excited to play.”
