Argentina legend Angel Di Maria has officially closed the door on a potential return for the 2026 World Cup, opting not to join fellow veterans Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo in the tournament.
Despite ongoing calls for his return, the 37-year-old clarified in an interview with AS that his international cycle has reached its natural conclusion.
Having secured every major trophy including Olympic Gold (2008), the World Cup (2022), and two Copa América titles (2021, 2024) Di Maria noted that he feels fulfilled.
“I’ve achieved everything I set out to do,” he explained, adding that it is time for a new generation of talent to lead the national team.
While he originally planned to retire after Qatar, he was persuaded to stay through the 2024 Copa América, which he described as the “perfect ending” to his storied career.
