Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has suggested that simply winning the Premier League title may not be enough for Arsenal’s Declan Rice to secure the Player of the Year award over Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes.
While Shearer acknowledges both as the season’s standout performers, he noted that Fernandes remains the “shining light” for a struggling United side.
The Portuguese playmaker has already racked up 16 assists and 8 goals as he eyes the league’s all-time assist record.“I think two outstanding candidates also would be Declan Rice and Bruno Fernandes,” Shearer told Betfair.
“Man United have been through everything this season but Bruno seems to have been the shining light… He’s been a fantastic player for them.”
Regarding the Arsenal midfielder, Shearer added: “With Declan Rice, the way he’s dragged Arsenal through games as well. I think it depends on what will happen in terms of teams winning.
If Arsenal were to win the treble or a double… then it would probably have to be an Arsenal player.”
