Chelsea fail in latest move for Juventus star Alex Sandro

Chelsea have been rebuffed in their latest enquiry for Juventus left back Alex Sandro in what will come as another blow to Antonio Conte's bid to strengthen his squad.

The Italian manager finds himself short on numbers at the start of the new Premier League season and has prioritised the Brazilian defender for much of the summer.

Juventus maintain that he is not for sale, but Chelsea are expected to make further attempts before the summer transfer window draws to a close.

It was the latest setback in a summer of frustration for Conte, who has had to sit back as the club's recruiters failed to land a number of his top targets, including Manchester United's new star Romelu Lukaku.

Sandro has long been considered the perfect man for Conte's wing-back role but Juventus have refused to entertain the idea of selling him — even for a world-record figure for a defender — as they chase Champions League glory.

Tiemoue Bakayoko, Alvaro Morata and Antonio Rudiger have arrived at Stamford Bridge in big-money deals but Chelsea have also lost a number of key figures such as John Terry and Nemanja Matic.

Tensions between Conte and the board have begun to increase as a result and may move to critical levels after the club ordered Diego Costa back from Brazil to train and to prepare for a return to the first-team squad.

Conte texted Costa in June to tell him he was no longer part of his plans, but figures above the Italian are not willing to let the striker sit on his £180,000-a-week contract while the squad is already so small.

Chelsea are also interested in Arsenal star Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and have seen an opening bid of £25million rejected. Arsene Wenger is obviously keen to keep the England international at the club, but risks losing him for nothing when his contract expires next summer.
