Chelsea expect Diego Costa to return to training and fight for match-selection, according to Sky Sports.

The striker yesterday threatened to remain in Brazil until he becomes a free agent. He was scheduled to be back at training on July 17 and will be fined £300k for failing to attend.

He said: He said: "If I have to I will stay in Brazil. I am open to being a year in Brazil without playing, even if Chelsea fine me for a year and don't pay me.

"I'll come back stronger. If I was in the wrong, I'd go back now and do as they say."

Costa was informed by Blues boss Antonio Conte earlier in the summer that he was no longer in his first-team plans for the season.

The Spain international has asked to be sold to his former club Atletico Madrid, with whom he spent four seasons with between 2010 and 2014.

However, Atletico are banned from signing players until January and Chelsea have, according to Costa, asked him to return to training with the reserves.

Contradictory statements have emerged from Stamford Bridge, with the Chelsea hierarchy asking Costa to return to training so as he can fight for selection for the first team.

Conte's side got their title defence off to a horror start on Saturday, losing to Burnley 3-2 at home.
